After a rousing evening at the Anchors Inn listening to the
music of the local band Anchors Aweigh, many of us started out to spend the
morning at the Western Brook Pond.
The pond, a glacier carved fresh water fiord-like lake, is characterized by its steep rocky cliffs
and stunning water falls.
In order to access the pond, we had to hike approximately 3 km, through the bog and tuckamore landscape, typical of the low lands.
Along the route, there were interpretive signs to explain the plant life of the bog. Shannon, our traveling botinist and ornithologist, pointed out some of plants to some of us who had a hard time differentiating the plants and berry’s from the weeds.
Tuckamore is a “newfie” term for the
wind swept pine and fir tree coastal forests.
After our short, but invigorating hike, we were treated to a two hour boat ride
to the far end of the 25 km fiord and its spectacular cascading 2000 foot waterfall named “Pissing Mare Falls”
After lunch we were on our own. There was a stop at the
information center where we watched a film about Gros Morne National Park and
gathered some info on other areas to visit. We chose to explore Lobster Head
Cove Lighthouse.
The scenery in the park, especially the various rock
formations, makes for some pretty spectacular landscapes!
It’s no wonder that Gros Morne National park has been named
a World Heritage Site.
Our day was complete with an equally spectacular hamburger feast,
provided by our wagon master and chief chef Spence, his wife Madi, tail gunner
Roger and Lorna, who really did all the work. Thanks for a great day!!
