Day 27 - Louisburg, NS

We woke to another sunny, beautiful morning.

A British tall ship, the Lord Nelson, happened to be docked at the harbor near out RV park.  It sailed to Halifax on its journey back to England.  The cannon in the fortress was fired in its honor as it passed by.

We toured the fortress of 1744 Louisbourg, which is the reconstruction of the original French town/fort.  At that time 650 soldiers and 1500 civilians lived and worked there, the main industry being cod fishing.  It took 20 years to reconstruct the fortress based on French documentation and archeological digs.

The people were in period costumes throughout the town and provided information of their lives at that time.

At noon at the Governor’s parade ground a demonstration march, musket firing and cannon shooting took place.

We all had lunch in a 1744 eating hall with pewter plates, one spoon and a giant napkin.  Rum punch was available.   Actually, the lunch was tasty.

In the afternoon some of us took a ride around the harbor to visit the Louisbourg Lighhouse and got a nice view of modern Louisbourg.
In the evening the group visited the local theater in-the-round and enjoyed the music of  “ Terry and Floyd.”
