Day 41 - Rocky Harbour

What a day! We took a Bonne Bay boat tour from Norris Point in the morning.  Norris Point is a cozy harbor a few miles from Rocky Harbour where we’ve been staying.

We carpooled to our take-off point, then waited for loading time – getting our coffee or buying more crafts.

On the boat tour we saw

the tablelands from afar, geologic rock formations, and several small fishing hamlets,

Gros Morne mountain topped by clouds,

a few eagles flying or perched on their nests,

in addition to a whale that teased us by dipping in and out of the water for our enjoyment.

Our boat captain, narrator and crew topped off our journey by playing guitars and singing a few Newfoundland songs – a preview to our evening show.

Following the boat tour many of us ate lunch at one of Rocky Harbour’s local cafés.  Jackie’s café offered fish and chips and hefty hamburgers.  Then we took care of chores or explored more of the area.  Jim and Monte, with help from Roger, changed and rotated their tires.  Monte, in his zest to help ‘clean’ Jim’s rig, discovered a worn tire.  What was done in jest saved Jim from having a blow-out down the road.

At 5:30 we all carpooled to the pub at the Ocean View Hotel to get our seats for the sold out 8:00 pm show of Anchor’s Aweigh

and have more bites to eat.
Two of the morning’s boat crew and their captain plus two more musicians entertained us for over 3 hours with rollicking Newfoundland songs and their variations of several rock groups.  All this was interspersed with Newfoundland jokes and humor.   Musical instruments included guitars, banjos, drums, an ugly stick and small accordions.  The round about the 7 ‘old’ ladies and the outhouse had everyone in stitches – especially with the captain’s face of many expressions. You had to be there to appreciate this.
For many this was a late night out!
